Use of interactive programs in seminars on probability theory and statistics in university education
Original language description
The presented paper presents the procedures for teaching statistics and probability at university. Due to our experience with Mathematica, we have used its outstanding features in teaching courses in probability theory and statistics. The chosen program and the environment that can be created by it correspond to the intuitive access of students to information. The program itself contains a large number of tools for working in the given fields and, moreover, it has unique means for presenting the results. All these possibilities lead to significantly easier understanding of probability theory and statistics and enable students to use them in practice as well as in their own lessons. Web applications based on webmathematica technologies with Apache server or standalone projects based on CDF file technology are also developed to facilitate learning. All applications created in this way are usable in both the web and mobile applications. They are interactive, user-friendly. They are also created in a pleasant graphical environment, which allows the user to always select several variants. Teaching statistics is challenging because it is primarily a discipline that uses a deep knowledge of basic mathematical disciplines - mathematical analysis, algebra, optimization. Using the above procedures, students gain not only theoretical knowledge, but also the correct procedures for solving common problems. It is also important that they also gain access to an extensive (verified) database of data from various scientific fields, which they can use free of charge. This approach to teaching allows students to acquire the right habits in solving real mathematical and statistical models, both quantitative and qualitative. Following the introduction of such procedures, the knowledge of not only students of mathematical disciplines but also other students who need a certain degree of statistical knowledge in their classification work is gradually improving.
