FOOD PRICE TRANSMISSION ESTIMATION TECHNIQUES AND EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE
Original language description
This book introduces empirical study of price transmission in agricultural and food markets. It specifically focuses on transition countries in Central and Eastern Europe as well as Central Asia. Price transmission has a significant effect on welfare of consumers, producers as well as on efficiency of agricultural and food markets. Recent volatility on commodity markets had especially significant impact on vulnerable groups like small agricultural producers or poor households. Rising agricultural prices have negative impact on households and nations that are net buyers of food. Volatility on global markets is transmitted via trade to national and local markets. On the other hand, if prices are not fully transmitted, producers and consumers will not receive proper price signals which can negatively affect efficiency of agricultural and food markets in the long-run. In this book we provide a summary of theory on determination of margins and link it to price transmission. We also provide a description of agricultural and food markets in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. This is followed by the review of theoretical foundations of estimation of price transmission using time-series data. We apply the theory in several case studies. Firstly, we study transmission of agricultural prices from global markets to national markets in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Secondly, we evaluate horizontal transmission of milk prices in Central and Eastern Europe. Thirdly, vertical price transmission of agricultural prices is studied in supply chains in Slovakia. In the end, we summarize empirical literature on price transmission in central and eastern Europe. The book is, in our opinion, useful for starting graduate students and other experts on agricultural and food markets as well as for other analysts of agricultural markets.
