The format XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and related technologies assert oneself to all spheres of human activities increasingly. There are two groups of the XML applications in digital cartography: 1.Coding of maps and map components by using XML formats 2.Spatial data coding through XML (e.g. GML /Geography Markup Language/, LandXML etc.). This paper try to connect both groups of the above-mentioned applications. The transform styles XSLT (Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformations) are able togenerate XML vector maps from XML spatial data. Presently there is solved the problem of common map generating, but there is free space for questions of thematic maps, because these maps are marginalize by the majority of GIS software. In this case there is discussed the thematic maps generating (include coloured combinations and above all cartographic scales) through XSLT 2.0.

Formát XML a další příbuzné technologie pronikají do všech sfér lidské činnosti. V digitální kartografii jsou dvě skupiny využití XML aplikací: 1. Kódování map a jejich částí (napr. SVG /Scalable Vector Graphics/, VML /Vector Markup Language/, DIAML /DIAGRAM MARKUP LANGUAGE FOR MAPS/ apod.). 2. Kódování prostorových dat (napr. GML /Geography Markup Language/, LandXML apod.). Tento příspěvek propojuje oba typy aplikací. Transformační styly XSLT vytváří vektorové mapy z prostorových dat. V současnosti jsou vyřešeny základní principy generování map, ale otázky zůstavají v oblasti tématických map.
