Prestress in Work - from Engineering Constructions to Living Cells
Original language description
We summarize main features of mechanical constructions with prestress. The way in which prestress may influence the stiffness of the construction is explained in detail; we explain essentially that the prestress may influence the overall stiffness independently if the structure is linear or nonlinear. We present several examples showing that the stiffness of a structure may increase but also decrease with increasing prestress. The important role of prestress in mechanics of living cells is outlined. Wepolemize the use of the so called ?tensegrity? models in biomechanics of living cells and show a competitive approach that is based on a more robust mechanism of keeping the prestress by controlling the cell volume. The presented model is used in formulating the special continuum model of a prestressed material.
