    The paper provides an introduction to the numerical solution of non-Newtonian fluid flow. In this contribution we limit ourselves to the case of the isothermal flow of a viscous incompressible fluid. For deriving the weak solution of the problem Galerkin's method is used. In order to incorporate the effect of the strain rate on the fluid characteristics the power-law fluid model is employed. This well-known type of the generalised Newtonian fluid is then used for a demonstration of the two-dimensional flow. For a spatial discretisation of a domain filled by a fluid the finite element method (FEM) is then used.
