Advanced Hard Coatings with Enhanced Toughness and Resistance to Cracking
Original language description
The chapter reports on the present state of art in the field of hard nanocomposite coatings. The chapter is divided into nine sections. The first section briefly describes the physics which is behind unique properties of nanocomposite coatings. The second section shows conditions under which the enhanced hardness of nanocomposite coatings can be achieved. The third section explains the principle of the formation of hard coatings with enhanced toughness. Main characteristics of coatings with enhanced toughness are given. The fourth section is devoted to formation of hard coatings with a low effective Young's modulus and a high ratio of hardness to effective Young's modulus. The control of this ratio by (i) the deposition parameters, (ii) the addition of selected element in coating and (iii) the energy delivered to growing coating is described in detail. The fifth section reports on hard coatings resistant to cracking, the methods used for the assessment of their resistance to cracking and the interrelationships between the mechanical properties of the hard coating and its resistance to cracking. Main characteristics of coatings with enhanced resistance to cracking are given. The sixth section is devoted to multifunctional hard coatings. Problems arising in the formation of multi-functional coatings are discussed. As examples, two-functional (i) tribological nc-TiC/a-C and (ii) highly transparent Si-Zr-O nanocomposite coating and three-functional highly elastic, antibacterial Al-Cu-N nanocomposite coating resistant to cracking are reported. The seventh section is devoted to a special over-layer which protects brittle coatings and prevents their cracking during bending. The eighth section summarizes main reported results. The ninth section shows trends of next development of new advanced hard nanocomposite coatings.
