Dynamic Behaviour of a Turbocharger Supported by Full Floating Ring Bearings with Unbalanced Bushings

  • Original language description

Typically, there are sub-synchronous components of significant magnitudes in a response of a turbocharger (TC) supported by full floating ring bearings. These sub-synchronous vibrations are induced by whirl instability in inner and/or outer oil films. Both experimental data and theoretical calculations suggest there is a strong dependency between TC unbalance and magnitudes of the sub-synchronous components due to high non-linearity of the system. In order to reduce undesired vibrations, TC rotors are balanced at high speeds. Floating bushings, however, are rarely balanced although they can spin as fast as 30,000 rpm. Although residual unbalance of a brand new bushing is usually low, it may worsen during the operation. The following paper deals with the influence of the unbalanced bushing on the response of a particular TC rotor. The TC dynamics is investigated by means of a complex computational model including journal bearing elasto-hydrodynamic (EHD) consideration.
