A novel method for on-line 3D localization of loose parts in reactor coolant system

  • Original language description

Loose parts monitoring systems (LPMS) have become a common part of nuclear power plants, providing tasks as impact detection, localization and loose part’s size estimation. Their current functionality and precision, however, seems not to reflect recent improvement and availability of computational capacity. Today’s LPMSs mostly rely on analytical computation and simplified input data, e.g. simplified geometry of the facility, both of which limit the final precision of the localization results. This paper presents a novel method of impact localization which uses a numerical algorithm applicable to an arbitrary geometry of the facility. Furthermore, the computationally most expensive part of this algorithm is executed once in the beginning which allows the on-line executed part to be a simple O(n) algorithm. Results of a case experiment described in this paper indicate a significant improvement of impact localization in comparison with current LPMSs and also reveal the limits which are still to be tackled in the future.
