Effect of various substrates on structure and properties of thermochromic VO2-based coatings with a low transition temperature
Original language description
The reversible semiconductor-to-metal transition of vanadium dioxide (VO2) makes VO2-based coatings a promising candidate for thermochromic smart windows, reducing the energy consumption of buildings. The paper deals with the effect of various substrates, namely soda-lime glass (SLG), Al2O3 (0001), YSZ (001), and amorphous Al2O3 and polycrystalline YSZ and ZrO2 layers on SLG, on structure, optical properties (luminous transmittance and modulation of the solar energy transmittance) and semiconductor-to-metal transition characteristics (transition temperature, amplitude and abruptness of the transition, and hysteresis width) of thermochromic VO2-based coatings with a relatively low transition temperature (18‒40 °C). The W-doped VO2 layers were deposited using a reactive HiPIMS with pulsed O2 flow control at a substrate surface temperature of 350‒450 °C and without any substrate bias voltage. Two controlled HiPIMS techniques, namely standard HiPIMS with 80 μs voltage pulses and deep oscillation magnetron sputtering (DOMS) with 500 μs macropulses composed of 10 high-power micropulses, with different energetics of the reactive deposition processes were used. The main aim was to improve the crystallinity of the thermochromic W-doped VO2 layers.
