Role of Liquid Water Properties for Enhancement of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Efficiency
Original language description
The irreversible thermodynamics is used to analyze transport processes inside an operating fuel cell. Specifically, we analyzed the relation between water diffusion, proton conductivity, water concentration inside the PEM (Polymer Electrolytic Membrane)and the transport processes in porous catalyst layers. Comparisons of the analysis with experiments leads to: i) an estimate of the influence of water surface tension on water diffusion flux through the PEM (Nafion and its modification ?doping by ZrO2 ,thermal processing, etc.) ii) an estimate of the changes of proton conductivity in the small membrane pores (the width of which is approx. 3-5nm), determining the most effective mechanism of the positive charge transport.
