Confusion of patients from the point of view of nurses
Original language description
The aim of the study was to find out the nurses' opinions of the patient safety in the association with patient confusion. Our study was not only focused on patients, but also on the confusion of material, the loss of material, problems with the patients' identification, or the confusion of two patients of the same surname situated at the same department. These possibilities of confusion or insufficient identification were investigated in our study. The investigation was outlined as a sociological study and was implemented by questionnaires asked by questioners. The field study was performed in the whole Czech Republic between September 15 and. 9 - 30, 9. 2013. The total sample consisted of 772 general nurses. It can be stated that a great majority of nurses do not regard patients' confusion as probable. 9.1% nurses admit problems with patients' identification. 63.0% nurses regard this possibility as negligible; as low is this possibility rated by 27.1% respondents. In comparison with the other types of confusions, the confusion of two patients of the same name situated at the same wards is rated high. This possibility is admitted by almost 1/3 (32.7%) of general nurses. Identification wristbands are used with all patients according to an absolute majority of nurses (90.6).%). Positive verbal identification is performed in all patients in 77.4% patients. According to the general nurses working at inpatient wards, the most frequent prevention of patient confusion is achieved by using idintification wristbands. On the other hand, the least frequent form of identification control is the check-up of the patiernt' s personal documents. Education, process changes, and technology are needed to improve the frequency and accuracy of patient identification.
