Introduction: The enlightenment in Bohemia
Original language description
The introductory article presents the topic and the structure of the volume and offers also a brief survey of the Enlightenment in Central Europe with a focus on the issues of morality. The article refutes the claim that the Enlightenment was defined asatheism but it accepts the division of the Enlightenment into a radical current and the mainstream. However, it argues that morality was a central concern of the Enlightenment philosophy and applies this premise at the interpretation of the Enlightenmentin Central Europe. It also points at the multicultural character of early modern Central Europe, which was significantly enriched by cosmopolitan aristocracy and Jewish maskilim. It argues that multiculturalism could be encountered in other European countries as well.
