Londoners or Glaswegians? Representing Polish Economic Migrants in Polish and British TV Series
Original language description
The essays explores the presentation of Polish migrants in the Polish series Londyńczycy and 'Homesick', an episode of the long-running Scottish TV series Taggart, in terms of Spivak's 'subaltern' category. Whether the Polish migrant can 'speak', that is, can be heard in the hegemonic anglophone discourse may be answered definitively in both cases (negatively for 'Homesick', positively for Londyńczycy). The construction of Polish migranthood in both cases, however, is historically and contextually limited. Both series confirm the validity of the traditional models in structuring Polish identity, yet ignore any form of otherness (especially otherness based in alternative sexual orientation) that threatens a unitary view of the collective.
