Cultural landscapes in Central Europe are of great value as evidence of our natural and cultural heritage and part of our common history. They are an important precondition for human well-being, quality of life and regional identity for residents and visitors alike. The economic and tourism potential of landscapes forms a source of sustainable regional development. With this in mind, the European Landscape Convention highlights in its preamble: "The landscape has an important public interest role in thecultural, ecological, environmental and social field, and constitutes a resource favourable to economic activity and whose protection, management and planning can contribute to job creation. (...) The landscape contributes to the formation of local cultures and (...) is a basic component of the European natural and cultural heritage, contributing to human well-being and consolidation of the European identity."
