Semen quantity and quality of young bulls
Original language description
The aim of this study was the analysis of the semen quantity and quality of young bulls and the comparison of differences between utility types. In this study, 26 bulls were involved. Bulls were sorted into 3 groups by utility types: 8 bulls of milk utility type (group Dairy), 8 bulls of combined milk and meat utility type (group Dairy/Beef), 10 bulls of meat utility type (group Beef). All bulls were bred in the same stabling and were fed by the same feed. Semen taking and the evaluation of quantity and quality were done during autumn and winter 2016 in insemination station according to established methods. Statistical significant differences in semen quantity and sperm concentration between groups were not established. Analysis of variance showed statistical significant difference in sperm activity between groups (F = 21.339, p = 0.0000). The highest sperm activity reached Dairy/Beef bulls and the lowest Beef bulls. Positive correlation between age of bulls and quantity of semen was found (R = 0.4730, p = 0.0147). Negative correlation between age of bulls and sperm concentration was discovered (R = -0.2904, p = 0.0028).
