Rubio and Suárez: A Comparative Study on the Nature of Entia Rationis

Jesuit philosophers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are today almost forgotten, in spite of their great significance at the time. As a contribution to the rediscovery of these philosophers I expose Tractatus de natura entis rationis, which isa part of an influential textbook Logica mexicana (1603) of Antonio Rubio (1548-1615), and make a comparative analysis of this treatise with Metaphysical Disputation 54 of Francisco Suárez. Rubio's treatise consists from seven section, in my paper, however, I focus on only the first three of them: Do Entia rationis exist? (Section I), What is the nature of Entia rationis? (Section II), What kinds of Entia rationis are there? (Section III). The results of my analysis show that from the point of view of content and argumentation Rubio's theory of beings of reason is very similar to Suárez's theory, although Rubio's theory is much simpler.
