The Structure of the Soul in St. Teresa of Avila?s Interior Castle
Original language description
This paper is based upon a thorough analysis of the Interior Castle and seeks to illustrate that St. Teresa of Avila presents a mature notion of the human soul as a multi-layered phenomenon with an inner dynamism. The somewhat overlooked implications of the symbol of the castle for the soul are considered, followed by the spatial structure of the soul. The dynamism of the soul itself is then examined. Finally, the role of the human will and its similarities with the notion of the will in St. Thomas Aquinas?s Summa Theologica is presented. A further goal of this article is to highlight that the language St. Teresa uses to describe her point is more technical and precise than the majority of commentators suggest.
