Die Hauptthese des Beitrags lautet: Auch wenn Moral keine Religion voraussetzen darf, bildet Religion trotzdem eine „notwendige Ergänzung“ der Moral in Kants Systematik. Die Rolle der Religion wird überwiegend im Zusammenhang mit der Frage nach der subjektiven moralischen Motivation untersucht und zwar insbesondere anhand von Kants Vorlesungen (Moralphilosophie Collins, Metaphysik der Sitten Vigilantius) und der Religionsschrift. Der Beitrag zeigt, dass der Religion in der praktischen Philosophie Kants eine konstitutive und konstruktive Rolle zukommt.
