The Method of Philosophy: Gracia’s Gift of Suárez

  • Original language description

How to do philosophy? In this paper I approach this question by looking at two impressive philosophical masters to whom I owe so much for my understanding of philosophy, Francisco Suárez (1548–1617) and Jorge J. E. Gracia (b. 1942). First, I briefly introduce Suárez and identify seven qualities characteristic of his texts. Based on these qualities I formulate heuristic principles that roughly correspond to them and hence capture an answer to the question how to do philosophy (section II). Second, I turn to Gracia and his statements of more or less the same principles that I have identified in connection with Suárez. Unlike Suárez he does more than apply these principles. As he applies them, he makes most of them explicit, although, at times, not in a systematic fashion. He also applies them to novel topics. In so doing, he provides an excellent example of how, a past author like Suárez can serve as a mentor even today (section III). Third, I offer some clarifications and qualifications concerning the uniqueness, triviality, and normativity of the Suárez-Gracia heuristics (section IV). Finally, in the conclusion, I observe that Gracia’s art of doing philosophy, while rooted in Suárez and Aristotelian-scholastic tradition, is not purely pre-modern, but combines the best elements of pre-modern, modern, and perhaps even post-modern philosophical approaches (section V).
