Suárez vs. Mastri and Belluto on Species in the Internal Sense

  • Original language description

The chapter treats the issue of the production and the causes of the internal sense’s intelligible likeness in the theories of the Jesuit Francisco Suárez, and of the Baroque Scotists Bartolomeo Mastri and Bonaventura Belluto. It shows that the main difference between these authors lies in the issue of the agent sense. While Suárez accepts it, Mastri and Belluto utterly reject it. It also shows that Mastri and Belluto’s view is far from being the only doctrine in Baroque Scotism. It is argued that the theory of the Irish Scotist Hugh McCaghwell basically follows Suárez’s view based on the idiosyncratical account of the agent sense.
