The Production of Intelligible Likeness in Second Scholasticism: Suárez, McCaghwell, and Mastri/Belluto
Original language description
The chapter presents three theories of the origin of intelligible species as elaborated by four Second scholastics. These are the doctrines of Francisco Suárez, Hugh McCaghwell, and Bartolomeo Mastri/Bonaventura Belluto. The author argues that the problem of interaction between two distinct substances, sc. between the extended thing and the thinking thing, which plagues Cartesian metaphysics, is structurally similar to the scholastic issue of the causal role of (material) phantasms in the production of (immaterial) intelligible forms. The author also argues (1) that Suárez’s and McCaghwell’s solution based on the notion of occasional causation anticipates Descartes’s treatment; and (2) that Suárez’s view substantially influenced McCaghwell’s view.
