Making Room for the Virtual Distinction: Bartolomeo Mastri between Scylla and Charybdis

  • Original language description

The paper undertakes a critical analysis of Bartolomeo Mastri’s attempt to make room, in a Scotistic context, for the virtual distinction. It concludes that Mastri succeeded neither in avoiding the Scylla of Scotus’s argument for the necessity of formal distinction for the possibility of any abstraction whatsoever, nor the Charybdis of making the formal distinction entirely unjustified.
