Ex Situ Sumatran Rhinoceros Conservation and the Agony of Choice. An Integration with the Management Strategy Proposed by Brandt et al. (2018)
Original language description
The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is one of the most endangered of all mammals, with the small surviving populations living only in Sumatra and Borneo. The latest genetic study (Brandt et al., 2018) showed that the three traditionally recognized subspecies of the Sumatran rhino are (or were) significantly different. Despite the regional genetic differences, Brandt et al. propose to pool all the efforts to save the species into an ex situ breeding program. In addition, it is essential to keep the cell cultures and gametes for in vitro fertilization techniques. Jan Robovský from the University of South Bohemia and Spartaco Gippoliti Società Italiana per la Storia della Fauna proposed a different approach – to maintain the hybrid Sumatra-Borneo lineage, but to attempt to maintain a lineage derived from Sumatran subspecies individuals alone. The authors of the original study agree with the proposal and perceive it as a way to maximize the chance of the species survival.
