Membrane-Containing Icosahedral DNA Bacteriophages
Original language description
The membrane-containing, icosahedral, DNA bacteriophages belong to the families Tectiviridae, Corticoviridae, Spherolipoviridae, Finnlakeviridae and the proposed Autolykiviridae. They are virulent or temperate, infecting a wide range of Gram-negative bacteria and a restricted range of Gram-positive Bacillus strains. Their genomes are linear or circular double-stranded DNA, or single-stranded DNA. The DNA is enclosed within a protein-rich membrane covered by a protein capsid. The infection cycle begins when capsid spikes recognize the host receptor. Genome delivery uses the internal viral membrane. The model species, tectivirus PRD1 and corticovirus PM2, share a conserved major capsid protein fold with adenovirus.
