Primary School Education Related to Death Issues
Original language description
This contribution addresses the issue of death education. It represents the concept of this education as created and realized in the United States (Levinton, 1977; Mahon et al., 1999; Wass, 2003; Doka 2015). The aim of the qualitative research was to map the experiences of teachers with the theme of death in the school context. It is followed by experiences with intervention in cases of death in the pupils’ closest family or death of a member of the school community, experience with death related topics in teaching, as well as conditions for death related education. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with six teachers. Their testimonies represent some of the possibilities of primary intervention. Regarding the approaches to secondary intervention, we draw on the works of Holland (2016), who determines four moments, in which the school can support a bereaved pupil and their family. These moments are also illustrated with specific teachers’ experiences.
