Interaction Between Subject and DGE by Solving Geometric Problems

  • Original language description

It is generally known that DGE (Dynamic Geometry Environment) considerably helps to find synthetic solutions of various geometric problems. With the help of DGE, many auxiliary questions related to the solution can be answered experimentally, the synergy of the solver’s knowledge and software tools is achieved. However, in many cases students are not able to exploit the DGE tools. This paper focuses on interaction between the subject and DGE in the process of solving a geometric problem. The aim is to provide a classification of ways of the use of DGE tools. In particular, we distinguish ways in which the subject uses software tools aiming at a particular step whose connection with the solution is evident, from the ways where the subject only has vague or general reasons for using the tools. The classification is based on introspection records of the solving processes connected to geometric problems.
