    BACKGROUND: Facemasks are increasingly widespread after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are some concerns regarding potentially harmful effects on respiration. The purpose of this study was to compare breathing patterns and the contribution of individual breathing compartments (IBC) with and without filtering facepiece respirator (FFR) during exercise. METHODS: Twenty-one healthy, well-trained participants (10 female) were randomly selected to complete either a test with FFR or without on the first day, followed by the alternative two days apart. Each day of testing consisted of a graded Bruce protocol on a treadmill (GXT). Three IBC were considered and measured using optoelectronic plethysmography (OEP) during four stages of GXT: pulmonary rib cage (VRCp), abdominal rib cage (VRCa), abdomen (VAb). Concurrently, inspiratory time (Ti), expiratory time (TE) and respiratory frequency (fR) were collected. RESULTS: Despite a substantial increase in inspiratory mean time during GXT stage 2 (13.2%, d=0.41), stage 3 (10.7%, d=0.41), and stage 4 (11.5%, d=0.67) while wearing FFR, the relative contributions of IBCs did not differ between conditions. CONCLUSIONS: This suggests that the increased work of breathing due to the respirator resistance is evenly distributed among the IBCs. While there may be negligible acute effects of FFR on breathing in well-trained individuals, long-term effects may differ.
