Black Soldier Fly business model as a Promising Tool for Circular Economy Development in Europe
Original language description
The amount of landfilled waste is continuously increasing at a growing rate worldwide. In agreement with the concept of circular economy, the EU considers biodegradable waste as an untapped source of raw materials and energy. There is wide consensus that processing biowaste via Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia Illucens, BSF) larvae rearing represents potentially competitive bioeconomy concept of turning biowaste into high value-added products (feed, oil, fertilizers, etc.). However, the implementation of this technology into commercial-scale faces obstacles in terms of outdated legislation, limited public awareness, and subconscious aversion of humanity towards insects. This study investigates the trend in research and development (represented by the number of publications and patents) in the field and puts it into context with business development. Robust statistical analysis firstly revealed that public support into this discipline is highly reasonable and results in multiple synergies in terms of bioeconomy, ethics and environmental sustainability.
