There is a high level of abstraction associated with Industry 4.0, but this does not change the potential that lies in this industrial concept. Industry 4.0, or its sub-elements, is expected to radically change the way all businesses, industries and ultimately society as a whole operate. The integration of Industry 4.0 ideas will not only lead to changes in companies‘ production systems, but is also likely to have a significant impact on other areas such as the labour market or business models.The aim of the publication is to present the background of Industry 4.0, to assess its importance, factors and status of its implementation and to propose a methodological approach for assessing the readiness of enterprises for Industry 4.0. The publication provides a definition of Industry 4.0, describes tools for economic assessment of Industry 4.0 implementation and presents the development of selected indicators in this area. The state of Industry 4.0 is surveyed through two questionnaire surveys among enterprises in the Czech Republic. To assess the readiness of enterprises for Industry 4.0, the structure of the proposed IPP4.0 index is described. It also includes the procedure for assessing enterprises using the developed software tool.
