Electrochemical oxidation of iohexol in wastewater by boron doped diamond electrodes: identification of by-products and degradation pathway
Original language description
Wastewater is considered a significant source of various organic pollutants which can be harmful to the living part of the environment. In this study, the electrochemical oxidation of iohexol, a representative iodinated contrast medium, in real wastewater influent using boron doped diamond (BDD) electrodes has been investigated. The findings of this study demonstrate that the oxidation of iohexol on BDD electrodes follows pseudofirst-order kinetics and an increase in the applied current density is associated with an enhancement in removal efficiency. At the higher current density of 100 mA.cm-2 almost total elimination of iohexol is achieved. Targeted LC-MS/MS analysis of the real influent wastewater revealed the presence of various pharmaceuticals belonging to different pharmaceutical classes, as well as illicit drugs and selected metabolites. An increase in the current density was observed to exert a comparable effect on their elimination as that observed in the case of iohexol, for some analytes, to a lesser or greater extent. Using the HPLC-HRMS method, eight degradation byproducts of iohexol were identified, and their structures were proposed. A degradation pathway for electrochemical oxidation employing BDD electrodes was elucidated.
