Factors regulating the motility of fish sperm
Original language description
Spermatozoa are unique among cells generated by the metazoans: they are unicells which, in species with external fertilization (oviparous fishes), are released usually in a hostile external medium where they have to cope with extremely harmful conditionsas frash water or sea water although they appear poorly protected when compared with eggs. This study summarizes how the environmental factors and eventually factors derived from eggs regulate the movement of spermatozoa of oviparous chondrostean and teleostean fresh water fish species. The oviparous fish sperm have to abide by a reproduction strategy in which a very brief period of reaction is needed to achieve their task. They exhibit a hyper motile behavior remarkably similar to the so-called hypermotility of mammalian sperm in the vicinity of eggs before fertilization. The hyper moti of fish sperm is fully triggered a t release in the new ionic/osmotic environment and is expressed by an initial high beat frequency, a high velocity
