Physiology of heartbeat reversal in adult Drosophila melanogaster (Diptera: Drosophilidae)
Original language description
With the help of newest electronic methods (pulse-light optocardiography, thermocardiography, strain-gauge cardiography) heartbeat pulsation was studied in Drosophila melanogaster. Unlike other insect species, Drosophila uses extremely efficient synchronic cardiac contractions. The backward oriented, retrograde heartbeat recorded in other insects occurs in Drosophila only sporadically in the form of individual or twinned systolic peaks. The newly discovered, compact ventricle with atrium and synchronicfunctioning of the insect heart shows structural and functional analogies with the functioning of the human heart.
