Using Testate Amoebae Communities to Evaluate Environmental Stress: A Molecular Biology Perspective
Original language description
Many ecosystems on Earth have been significantly reformed during the industrial age as a result of anthropogenic pressure, thus threatening essential ecosystem services, public health and biodiversity. In this context, the methods for fast and reliable evaluation of environmental quality are emerging rapidly. The use of bioindicators, that is, organisms or communities whose population can reveal ecosystem health has been favored over the last 60 years. The choice of the models is critical, as they must be sensitive enough, commonly found and reasonable easy to retrieve, identify and enumerate. Here, we present testate amoebae (shelled amoeboid protists) as an efficient model for bioindication to monitor environmental changes in freshwater and soil systems. Using the knowledge that has been accumulated over more than one century of research in testate amoebae ecology and the last developments in DNA-based environmental surveys, we provide a perspective on present and future research developments in biomonitoring based on testate amoebae.
