Ribes-infecting viruses – How many and how harmful are they?
Original language description
Under the EPPO Certification scheme for Ribes, six viruses and several other virus-like pathogens or diseases with unclear etiology, not occurring in the EPPO region or of minor importance, are subject to testing during the production of Ribes nuclear stock (Anonymous, 2008). Additional Ribes-infecting phytoplasmas and three viruses have been identified using conventional EPPO-recommended test methods, like mechanical inoculation to test plants, graft transmission, and ELISA. PCR also is used extensively and it is the most reliable and sensitive method for detecting viruses and phytoplasmas in Ribes. The introduction of high-throughput sequencing (HTS) has led to the description of several novel viruses in Ribes, and more are expected to be described in the near future. With respect to the many new virus discoveries, we have reviewed Ribes-infecting viruses, their symptoms, transmission modes, and RT-PCR primers. We also discuss the relevance of new virus discoveries for Ribes propagation, breeders, and growers.
