Pelagic ciliate assemblage of high-altitude lake Atexcac (Puebla, México): Comparison with similar lakes in other regions.

  • Original language description

The composition of pelagic ciliate assemblage of the Mexican Altiplano, athalassohaline lake Atexcac (ATX; Puebla State) is compared with that of European, above timberline-lakes (EL: Ovre Neadalsvatn and Stavsvatn, Norway; Lochnagar, Scotland; Starolesnianské and Nizné Terianské, Slovakia; Chuna, Russia). Sessillids Rhabdostyla cf. nebulifera and Cothurnia sp. dominated ATX during the lake overturn and cyanobacteria Nodularia cf. spumigena development. Oligotrichs and other ciliates were important whenthe anoxic hypolimnion was established. There was a lack of algivorous species (in EL particularly Urotricha spp. and large Prorodon sp., Holophrya spp.); mixotrophic ciliates (oligotrichs and Askenasia spp. in European lakes) were very scarce. Mesodinium sp. found during overturn was the only one typical flagellate hunter (Askenasia spp. in EL). Predominance of bacterivorous species comparing with other groups is apparently related to a high bacterial concentration during the overturn
