Thin layer chromatographic analysis of pteridine-like pigments in the migratory locust, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (Orthoptera: Oedipodidae).
Original language description
Acidic methanolic extracts of haemolymph, cuticle and eyes of larvae and adults of the migratory locusts, Locusta migratoria migratorioides (R. et L.) were analysed by method of thin layer chromatography. The Rf values as well as the colour of fluorescence under uv light (350 nm) were used for identification of pteridine-like substances when compared with 12 pteridine standards. The samples of haemolymph, cuticle and eyes of the larvae as well as adults revealed the specific pattern. Application of juvenoid induced the solitary phase-like pigmentation of cuticle and haemolymph and increased content of pterin, biopterin, leucopterin and probably also lumazin. Melanization of cuticle nearly disappeared. The similar but not so strong effects have been induced by application of neem oil. Application of precocene caused a number of changes in the pigment pattern in all samples, included melanization of cuticle, particularly in larvae.
