FEEDBACK EFFECTIVENESS: PROVIDING FEEDBACK TO UNSUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES OF LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY WRITING EXAMS
Original language description
While there are many different language proficiency tests and almost any imaginable way of preparation for them, receiving feedback after taking a test apart from assessment marks, is scarce. However, feedback is considered one of the most important tools for language learning. Providing detailed feedback after a failed attempt might support and encourage candidates in their following preparation in order to succeed at high stakes proficiency language exams. Therefore, it was decided to provide productive language skills performance feedback for unsuccessful candidates of the STANAG exam to increase the overall success rate. This paper aims to offer an insight into the effectiveness of providing feedback to unsuccessful candidates of high stakes English language proficiency tests by analyzing candidates' performance on the writing part of the STANAG exam. Samples of unsuccessful candidates' writing were studied as well as the provided comprehensive oral feedback for those candidates. Their subsequent writing test performance was analyzed, and the quantitative and qualitative aspects of feedback effectiveness was measured using data gathered at the actual exam and through questionnaires test candidates completed immediately after the re-examination attempt. Based on the results from the research, conclusions were formulated to enhance future learning and teaching as well as to design standardized feedback methods.
