Abstract: Effective communication is vital in crisis situations, especially in military contexts where clear messaging influences decision-making. This study examines how cognitive linguistics can enhance English language instruction within the Czech military by fostering better communicative competence. Cognitive linguistics views language learning as a fundamental cognitive process, closely linked to procedural memory and embodied experience—similar to learning skills like riding a bike or cooking. Rather than emphasizing isolated grammar rules, this approach promotes teaching that reflects dynamic, context-based language use. The study focuses on applying cognitive linguistics to teaching question formation in the oral part of a high-stakes English exam. Findings show learners typically move from using simple, memorized questions to producing more complex, experience-based inquiries. This shift reflects the role of personal experience and procedural learning in language development. The research supports using cognitively grounded methods to develop practical, flexible communication skills, particularly in high-pressure environments such as the military.
