The article analyses the approaches to the training of military professionals at the University of Defence, Brno in terms of fulfilling the key competencies. The set of key competencies was determined based on the analysis of the Ministry of Defence strategic documents, the results of which facilitated setting the starting points for the development of military leadership under the conditions of the Czech Armed Forces. By assessing the strategic analyses, the trends and required direct leadership capabilities could be identified in terms of requirements for a successful conduct of future military operations. The starting points, trends, and required capabilities were used as the platform for identifying the key competencies of military professionals in the context of the development of future security and operational environment. The comparison of the proposed set of key competencies and the assumptions for their acquiring resulted in the identification of the ifference. The expertise was carried out to set the core prerequisites for acquiring the identified key competencies at the University of Defence. A set of recommendations was created to streamline the process of direct leadership training in the Master´s Degree programs at the University of Defence.
