Improving Explosive Ordnance Disposal Training: Determinants and Solutions in Virtual Reality Environments

  • Original language description

The paper deals with the issue of explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) works and other military engineering in virtual reality. The aim of the article is to describe the virtual reality developed at the Centre of Excellence EOD, which is used for education and training of EOD soldiers, to propose the inclusion of the issue in the concept of international military exercises and also to propose possible areas of further development and to specify limitations to them. The currently developed virtual reality for EOD soldiers offers repetitive training of EOD soldiers in safe conditions, minimal operational costs, and time savings in terms of equipment maintenance when training with real equipment. The main contribution of the paper is the modelling of the working environment of EOD soldiers in a team during the solution of an explosive threat incident, which will enable soldier cooperation. It will also contribute to improve the decision making of team leaders during incident response. Interoperability not only across EOD units with virtual reality in NATO may become a challenge and a great advantage in the future.
