This paper describes the possibilities of extending the stable operation region of the centrifugal air compressor with fixed geometry. The influence of the impeller design on the course of the compressor characteristics is discused. The main attention isgiven to the air flow entering the impeller and the vaneless diffuser as well also the influence of these parts on the compressor stable operation region is explained
