The article describes two possible approaches to the determination of optimal vehicle durability time. The first approach is based on the life cycle costs calculation, and the second approach is based on the determination of the failures intensity relation. Therefore it is necessary to collect and sort data on the occurrence and relevancy of failures, costs on failures removal, preventative maintenance costs and costs on operating state. The calculation of the vehicle Land Rover Defender, which has beendelivered to the Army of the Czech Republic since 1995, is mentioned as a model for optimal mean time determination of durability time. In this case, the vehicle durability time for the Land Rover Defender was calculated at 250 000 km. This results fromthe calculation using both abovementioned independent methods.
