Tribology's Contribution to Efficient Maintenance of Military Engines

  • Original language description

The reliability of an engine of military vehicles depends on both the design and the maintenance/support. A less reliable design will require more corrective maintenance and will be less available for operational use. Similarly, engine that does not receive preventive maintenance ? i.e., servicing, lubrication, diagnostics, reduction of wear process, tribology, component replacements/rework, and inspections for potential failures ? at the optimum times for the particular design and operational scenariowill not perform as reliably as intended and will require more corrective maintenance. In summary, the primary ways of increasing engine availability/readiness are to increase the reliability of the military vehicle and reduce the time spent on corrective and preventive maintenance.
