Evaluation of D-81 cannon barrel bore wear by firing APFSDS projectiles
Original language description
The 125mm tank cannon D-81had been initially provided with the 3VBM-3 cartridge including the 3BM-9 (APFSDS) sub-calibre projectile. The phenomenon of so called "ring-shaped wear" was discovered during the first years of use. This form of barrel bore wear is caused by oscillation of the sabot elements. The character of the wear has been verified by measurement. The 3VBM-6 cartridge including the 3BM-12 (APFSDS) subcalibre projectile was the next cartridge used and it differed in construction of penetrator and penetrating core. However, the diameter measurement of barrel bore worn by this projectile has not indicated the ring-shaped character. The article concerns with the proposal of the appropriate method of barrel bore wear evaluation and the measurement points placing, with respect to the new quite differently designed 125mm PpSv type 97 projectile
