Effects and limitations of spatial resolution of imagery for imagery intelligence
Original language description
The paper deals with spatial resolution of aerial and satellite imagery and its influence on the process of image interpretation in imagery intelligence, referred to as IMINT. Spatial resolution is an important measure but for intelligence purposes a different measure of an image quality rather than the image physical parameters is needed. This measure is called interpretability and it affects various activities of the image analysts such as detection, recognition, identification, etc. The paper shows the relationship between spatial resolution and image interpretability which is demonstrated using the examples of selected target types. The Image Interpretability Rating Scale is presented as an objective standard for image quality.
