Changes of chemical stability and sensitivity properties of artificially aged double-base and triple-base propellants and Semtex? type explosives

  • Original language description

Testing and evaluations of selected artificially aged propellants and explosives were performed. Samples of classical double-base propellant and its less toxic version for aircraft safety rocket motor, sample of triple-base propellant for 155 mm calibremodular system and samples of the RDX and HMX version of plastic bonded explosive Semtex were prepared. The propellants were artificially aged at temperatures of 89 and 80 °C at times corresponding to 10 years in storage at 25 °C and at the temperature of 65 °C at times corresponding to 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of storage at 25 °C. Changes in chemical composition of the aged samples in comparison with the non-aged samples were measured by HPLC/UV and GC/MS. Chemical stability and mechanical sensitivity ofthe aged samples were determined by several methods of classical stability tests commonly used for propellants: Heat test at 100 °C (HT100 ), Bergmann-Junk test at 120 °C, Methyl-Violet test at 120°C , Heat Flow Calorimetry (HFC), vacuum
