Differential effects of AI self-checkout implementation on VIP versus regular B2B retail customers

  • Original language description

This study examines how customer segment membership moderates self-checkout technology adoption and behavioral responses in business-to-business retail environments. Using an integrated theoretical framework combining the Technology Acceptance Model, Service-Dominant Logic, and Diffusion of Innovations Theory, we analyze point-of-sale transaction data from Czech retail stores through propensity score matching difference-in-differences analysis. Findings reveal a U-shaped adoption pattern with VIP Silver customers demonstrating significantly slower adoption compared to regular and VIP Gold customers, though effect sizes remain minimal. Self-checkout implementation increased purchase frequency more substantially among VIP customers but produced no differential spending effects between segments. This research advances retail technology theory by demonstrating that customer relationship status systematically influences technology adoption patterns, challenging the universal application of technology acceptance models and revealing selective behavioral impacts where convenience improvements affect transaction frequency but not expenditure levels across customer segments.
