Original language description
Potato planted areas in CR in the years 1997-99 have been stabilised at the level cca 72,000 ha (2.3 % of the area of arable land). This area represents a decrease of 39,000 ha in comparison with the average value obtained in the years 1990-92. From total potato production is about 50 % used for human consumption, 5 % for starch production, 15 % for seed and nearly 30 % represent stockfeed potatoes (potatoes remained after sorting) and losses. From potatoes used for human consumption it is about 15 % manufactured to products, but it must be stated that many of these products are imported and only a little amount is exported, whereas in CR the capacities of production are not used up enough. An average potato yield per ha (incl. seeds) was in the 1996-99 years 20.3 t/ha, but in comparison with the developed E.U. countries the yields are low. Czech growers have to consecutively enhance yields to the level about 30 t/ha in order to reach comparable prices with developed potato E.U. countr
