Seasonal prevalence of the coccidium Eimeria leuckarti and intensity of faecal oocyst output in various categories of horses in Czech republic

  • Original language description

The results of a survey on the prevalence of patent infections with the coccidium Eimeria leuckarti (Flesh,1883) in herds of horses in Czech Republic are presented. The prevalence of infection and the intensity of faecal oocyst output were determined ina herd of 36-69 horses using Breza flotation technique (specific gravity 1 300). Herd of horses were examined at monthly intervals during two years. During experimental period were found oocysts by 5.79% of individual horses (mean monthly prevalence of E.leuckarti varied from 0 to 3.48%). The mean intensity of oocysts discharge was very low (6.05 OPG). The oocysts were determined mostly in spring and in autumn, four times in 1989 year (in January, May, September, November), from May to September 1990,and in March and April 1991. All categories except sport horses and saddle horses for children shed oocysts during experimental period. The infection the most frequently occurred at the stud horses and the horses younger than two years of a
