Analysis of a factorial matting design for growth and carcass traits in rabbits
Original language description
In the year1995 to 1999 a factorial matting design with rabbit lines of the type 3 x 2 was realized. The 3 sire lines were: HY PLUS P 331 "standard", HY PLUS PS 331 "giant" and HY PLUS P 39 "standard". The 2 dam lines were: HY PLUS PS 19 and HY PLUS P 443. Following traits were analyzed: average daily gain, average daily feed consumption, feed consumption per kg gain, final live weight, carcass weight and carcass yield. The factorial analysis provided estimates of general combining ability (GCA) effectsfor sire (P) and dam (M) lines and the specific combining ability (SCA) effects for sire x dam lines. Basic features of the factorial and diallel mating design are quite different, but the genetic information obtained from the two designs is similar. For a fixed number of experimental units, much more parents can be used in the factorial mating design than in the diallel scheme.
